Rock Pipit at Martins Haven

 Rock Pipit

We had booked to cruise around Skomer for the evening hoping to see Shearwater, Guillemot and Razorbills but due to bad wind our trip was cancelled.  As an alternative we chose to sit on the pebble beach at Martins Haven for 2 hours so we could watch the rafting Shearwaters who would then disappear to their burrows at sunset.  That was the theory, however the Shearwaters never made an appearance!  We did however see this Rock Pipit scouring the waters edge for food.

Our day trip to Skomer nearly didn't happen as we were under the impression you could turn up on the day and buy a ticket!  We arrived at our B&B in Dale, Marloes on Monday our host informed us all tickets will have been sold out since December.  Tuesday morning 9am we were at Martins Haven ticket booking office.  Our names were put on a list and we were told just sit and wait outside, we will let you know if we get any cancellations.  There were five of us on the list, we all got on the second sailing just after 11am.  We assume a lot of people had cancelled due to Pembrokeshire being on amber weather alert, bit of mystery as the weather that day was so hot, 5 hours in the heat with no shelter was tiring, but what a day, we were rewarded by very close sightings of the puffins and so many other birds too, even saw a short eared owl flying low he disappeared quickly in to a bed of pink campion.
